Mom's Peach Cobbler - Retro Recipe Saturday

Welcome back to another Retro Recipe Saturday.  Since I am trying to get my couch finished, I am falling back on an old tried and true family recipe.  My mom made this when I was in California in June, and my niece Paulina beat me to the punch with posting the recipe. So since she is 14 and very talented I am posting a link to her blog.  Can you believe she got this blog up and going in one morning?  Crazy Crafty Kids is where you can find Paulina newest posts.

This is a really great and easy recipe and an old standby in our family.  So here is Mom's Peach Cobbler.

Mom's Peach Cobbler

Ingredients:

6 cups fresh peaches peeled and sliced

1 cup sugar

1/2 tsp mace

3/4 cups butter

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 cups flour

2 tsp baking powder

2 cups milk

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Peel and slice peaches.  In a bowl mix peaches with sugar and mace.  Then set aside.

Combine sugar, flour, and baking powder.  Add milk and stir well.

Melt butter in 9 x 13 in baking pan

Then add the batter.

Then add the peaches.

Bake for 1 hour.

Delicious served warm with or without ice cream.

Danny's Sweet Tea

If you follow me, you know that my son Danny just got out of the marines, if this is your first time here, you know now.  Anyway, Danny was stationed at Camp LeJuene in Jacksonville, North Carolina for four years.  While living in the south he acquired an affinity for Sweet Tea, and out of necessity he learned how to make it himself.  So here goes, I am presenting you with Danny's recipe for Sweet Tea.


Danny's Sweet Tea

Ingredients:


3 Lipton Tea Bags
3 cups Sugar
1 gallon water

Directions:

Boil 4 cups of the 1 gallon of water with 3 lipton tea bags for 15 minutes.  Remove from heat.



Take tea bags out of the pan, and add 3 cups of sugar and stir until dissolved.  Add 2 cups of cold water from the 1 gallon of water to the tea/sugar mixture.



Then pour the sweet tea into a 1 gallon container and add the rest of the water.

Refrigerate and serve over ice.

Now on to a new DIY beauty product.  Some readers were concerned that my Natural Translucent Face Powder would not be sheer on their faces.  It goes on sheer, not white, but I said that I would try to make it with some color.  I had read somewhere, I am not sure, that you could add unsweetened cocoa to it to give it color.  So the science experiment for the day is to make a flesh toned Translucent Face Powder.  

The original recipe for Natural Translucent Face Powder was:

2 TB Potato Starch
2 TB Arrowroot Powder.

I have decided that I like this recipe better.

New Translucent Face Powder without Tint

2 TB Cornstarch
2 TB Arrowroot Powder

Mix together well and use with a powder brush.  I feel like this is a little sheerer then with the Potato Starch.

To add color I have added

1 tsp cinnamon  (a light brown color)
3/4 tsp Mace  (a golder color)
1/8 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder (a dark brown color)

Once, I started adding cocoa powder, I felt that it was a little to dark for my skin, so I mixed up a different batch with Mace and Cinnamon.  Mace is more a lighter gold color then cinnamon.  Even though I am giving amounts to add, you will need to play with it a little until you get a color that you like.  Test a small amount on your wrist until it is the color that matches your skin best.

Mine is still pretty light, which is all right with me, also I just use a small amount.  I dip my brush in the powder and then shake it off, and then brush it on my face.  If you want this darker you can add more cinnamon or more unsweetened cocoa powder, depending on the color that you want.  You could also add more mace, though I didn't love the smell of that.  I have also read that some people add some of their own foundation mineral powder to give it color.  I don't use mineral powder because it makes my fine lines show, I don't need to look any older!!!

Homemade Clorox Clean Wipes

A few months ago I was researching homemade cleaning wipes for my kitchen and bathroom, and I ran across several recipes for them.  The first was from Instructables - How to make your own (cheap and green) cleaning wipes and the other one was from One Good Thing by Jillee's Homemade Clorox Wipes.  I liked the idea of being able to clean my counters and table without throwing away wipes every time.

One Good Thing by Jillee's Homemade Clorox Wipes uses rags, and I did not have any rags around so I kept looking for different ideas.  I then came across the idea at Instructables - How to make your own (cheap and green) cleaning wipes which uses Mr. Clean Wipes.  The store had Handi Wipes on sale, so that was great and then I also found Fabuloso in a Citrus and Fruit Scent, which I love.  At that point I had what I needed to make my own Homemade Clorox Wipes.  I found that the directions from Instructables used too much Fabuloso for the wipes.  It was too soapy and took too long to rinse off of my counters and tables.  So I cut the soap to water ratio.

Here are the directions for:

Homemade Cloxox Clean Wipes

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Fabuloso ( any scent that you like, I like the Citrus and Fruit Scent)
1 cup water
2 6packs of Handi Wipes
Old Clorox Wipes container

Directions

Cut your Handi Wipes in half width wise rather then lengthwise.

Next lay first wipe flat and then lay the next wipe over the left 1/2 of the first wipe.  Fold the single half of the first wipe over the first half of the second wipe.  Then lay a third wipe over the right half of the second wipe ( so it is on top of the first wipe also).  Fold like previously and keep going until all of your wipes are folded.

Next roll your wipes up so that they fit in your old clorox wipes container.  You can trim them down if necessary to fit in your container.  Make sure to pull the very center sheet up to start your wipes.

Then mix the Fabuloso and water and pour over your wipes inside the container. 

I then turn the container shake the container several times, so that all of the cleaning mix gets absorbed into the wipes.

Next use as you would your usual wipes.  You should have 24 wipes.

After I use them, I just rinse the wipe and let it dry.  I then put it in my laundry, and I have a basket on top of my dryer to put them in until I make my next batch.

Let me know what you think of these wipes.  I try not to use chemicals in my cleaning supplies, but I have not found something that is chemical free yet, that I like as much as this.  When I do I will post an update.

The Harbinger Book Review

Hi Everyone.  I'm a little late today, but finally up and going.  I've been working so hard on the couch that I had not gotten today's post done yet.  The couch should be done by the end of the week.  Today, I am reviewing the book The Harbinger.

The Harbinger by Jonathan Cahn

I finished the book, The Harbinger by Jonathan Cahn while I was in Mexico, and I really enjoyed it.  It is based on biblical scripture in the book of Isaiah verses 9:10 - 9:13.  Though most of Isaiah 9 is used throughout the book.  The one thing I would like to say before I go any further, is that even though this book uses biblical scripture to make it's points, it is a work of fiction, and we must remember that.  I would not want to recommend this book, and have people think that this book is fact and that Jonathan Cahn is foretelling the future.  I am recommending this book purely as a work of fiction.  Jesus was very clear in Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only."

This book opens with a journalist receiving an ancient disc in the mail.  He does not know how old it is or where is came from.  He does some research, but comes to a standstill, until he meets a man by a river in New York City, who starts to give him clues to this disc.  It is actually called a Harbinger and was used by the prophet Jeremiah when he would give God's warnings to the people of Isreal.  The man turns out to be a mysterious prophet, who is giving the journalist warnings or harbingers about the United States, and September 11th and all of the events following September 11th. 

There are 9 harbingers or 9 warnings that America supposedly overlooks, as did ancient Isreal.  This is when I remind you again that this book is fiction, even though there is biblical scripture quoted throughout the book to make to make it case.  I found the book fun and fascinating, and I thought that Jonathon Cahn made good points.  He takes us from 9/11 through the country's financial meltdowns, and tries to lead us to a point that God is trying to get our attention, with all of these harbingers.  

The point of this book, which is a good point, is that instead of turning to God in times of trouble, we tend to think that we can fix things with our own strength.  The Harbinger is telling us that we must turn to God to help us.  Only with God's strength, we can overcome life's difficulties, and I think that is a good point.

I would recommend this book, though a little slow at times, it is very interesting.  There were many historical events that I did not know, which also help make for a very interesting story.

Retro House in Malibu Photo Series

Yesterday, I told you I was going to show you the house that inspired my new section Retro Recipes Saturdays  here is the link to that post Mary Mac's Brown Bacon & Retro Recipe Saturdays.  Today I am going to show you this wonderful house, that so many of my childhood memories come from.  I had most of my birthday parties there, and I can remember New Years Eve's, and Passovers, and taking my wonderful husband to meet my aunt for her approval.  This is one of my favorite places on earth.  When I see it I breathe a sigh of relief,  it is kind of like all of the stress leaves my body when I get there.
Okay, so on to the pictures.

This is the big rock ( I wrote about it in Otters - Photography Series 5 )in front of my aunts house, and a picture of the house.

 This is my mom and my cousin Jack talking out on the front deck.

 These are some houses on the beach.  The house on the left was Tony Danza's and the one on the right is one of the newer homes.  A lot of people are buying the older homes and tearing them down to build larger one.  So you don't see as many of the older beach cottages.

 These pictures are of the dining room and the stained glass window at the end of the dining room next to the built in cabinets.

 
 
 

These are some of the retro serving pieces that my aunt had in her cabinets.  They are really beautiful.  It was really fun looking at all of these things.  I love the bowls.

  

The picture above left is the kitchen with the original appliances, a the picture on the right are the inverted champagne flute Murano glass light fixtures.

 I love the den on the left.  It has a bar, which is always well stocked.  Jack and his wife Dede had this couch custom made for the living room.  It totally fits in with the 50's theme.  Just beautiful.

The first two pictures are of the guest bathroom's soaking tub and the counter and sink. The third picture is part of the master bathroom.

 

 Finally, Jack and Dede found an original Don The Beachcomber menu, and framed it with glass on both sides, so that you can look at it from either directions. 

I hope that you have enjoyed this little tour of my Aunt Charlotte's house in Malibu.  I have such great memories of growing up there.
